KEY POINTS:
A 19-year-old woman is due to appear in court today in connection with a hammer attack on a Gisborne taxi driver early yesterday morning.
Police are seeking a Maori woman in her thirties, also believed to have been involved in the attack.
Detective Sergeant Kevin Ford, of Gisborne police, said the 70-year-old driver was attacked about 2am, after picking the women up from outside a bar in the centre of town.
Mr Ford said the women told the driver to pull over in London St. One of the women then allegedly hit him over the head twice with a hammer before the pair escaped with $100 in takings.
The driver suffered serious bruising and spent the night in hospital under observation but has since been discharged.
Police described the attack as "very nasty".
Mr Ford said bail would be opposed at the 19-year-old's court appearance.
