A woman died after a car and ute collided in Upper Hutt this evening.

Police were called to the collision on the corner of State Highway Two and Whakatiki Street at 6.15pm.

A woman died at the scene and two other people were taken to Hutt Hospital with moderate injuries, Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman Diane Livingston said.

The Fire Service attended the crash but no persons had to be cut out, central Fire Service shift manager David Meikle said.

Parts of State Highway Two are expected to be closed for up to two hours while police investigate the crash.

Diversions in place:

• Northbound SH2 traffic will be diverted off SH2 onto Fergusson Drive over the Silverstream Bridge

• Southbound SH2 traffic will be diverted off SH2 onto Gibbons Street and Fergusson Drive

The Fire Service is also attending the crash, central Fire Service shift manager David Meikle said.

No persons had to be cut out of the vehicles, he said.
