A woman has died in a two-car crash in the South Waikato District overnight.
Emergency services were called out to accident on State Highway 1 near Lichfield, 4km south of Putaruru just before 10pm.
Four people were taken to Tokoroa Hospital and a woman, who had been trapped in the car for 40 minutes, was flown by Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
The woman went into cardiac arrest several times at the scene and while en route to hospital, and eventually succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Serious crash investigative officers are still at the scene.
