A woman has died after being thrown from a vehicle which crashed north of Masterton in the Wairarapa late last night.
Police said a single vehicle with four occupants lost control and crashed into a power pole on State Highway 2 near the intersection of Mikimiki Road around 11.45pm.
Inspector Paul Jermy said a female passenger was thrown from the vehicle and died instantly.
Two other occupants of the vehicle were critically injured, while the alleged driver of the vehicle received minor injuries, he said.
Masterton police and the police serious crash unit are investigating the accident.
Mr Jermy said a decision on charges was yet to be made - as police were investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Vehicles were diverted along Opaki Kaiparoro Road while the serious crash team conducted a scene examination but were lifted about 8am.
The name of the deceased will be released once next of kin have been notified.
