A 67-year-old Tongan woman has been killed on the way to a family Christmas reunion in the Hawke's Bay.
The woman, who lived in Wellington, was a passenger in the car which lost control on an open road stretch of State Highway 2 at Hamua, 51km northeast of Masterton about 7.20pm yesterday.
The car left the road and flipped several times before ending up about 30m into a paddock, said Sergeant Steve Baddock, of Pahiatua police.
The driver and two other passengers were taken to Palmerston North Hospital with serious injuries.
The serious crash unit was investigating. It appeared no other vehicles were involved but police were not yet sure what might have caused the car to lose control, Mr Baddock said.
The woman's name has not yet been released.
