A 42-year-old woman died after being hit by a train in Tawa, north of Wellington, last night.
Police said the accident occurred shortly after 9pm and was not considered suspicious.
KiwiRail spokesman Nigel Parry said all trains between Wellington and Paraparaumu had been suspended while police investigated, with buses filling in for the passenger services.
The line was cleared late last night and service was back to normal ahead of the work rush this morning.
Mr Parry said it was standard practice for the train driver to be stood down following a fatal accident and they were offered counselling and time off work.
"We have to look after our drivers."
