A Levin woman who fell while riding on the back bumper of her partner's car has died.
The 35-year-old woman was riding on the bumper of the Subaru station wagon on the streets of Levin early this morning after the pair apparently had an argument, police said.
The man got into his car to leave, so the woman climbed onto the bumper to try and stop him.
Horowhenua CIB detective sergeant Todd McLoughlin said the man had driven at least a kilometre before the woman fell off, hitting her head and seriously injuring herself.
The incident happened at about 2.40am today and she died in Palmerston North Hospital about 3pm .
The man was not driving fast, as he knew the woman was hanging onto the back of his car, Mr McLoughlin said.
Police had talked to a number of people who had witnessed the event, including the driver. It was too early in the investigation to say whether charges would be laid, Mr McLoughlin said.
