A Kaikohe woman has died after what police allege was a domestic violence attack.
Detective Inspector Karyn Malthus said an ambulance was called to the woman's flat on Kaikohe's main street last night and a concerned member of the public performed CPR until it arrived.
The woman was flown to Whangarei Hospital, where she died early this morning.
Ms Malthus said a 38-year-old man was arrested at the woman's flat and was charged with assault.
"No-one else is being sought in connection with the death of the woman," Ms Mathus said.
The man will be appearing in the Kaikohe District Court this morning.
Ms Mathus said police have launched a homicide inquiry.
The woman's flat has been cordoned off and a post-mortem examination will be carried out on on her body.
Ms Malthus said a two year-old was at the flat when the alleged attack took place.
She said the alleged attack was the second in the last month which has seen someone die.
