KEY POINTS:
A woman dangled her one-year-old child out of of a car window while the vehicle was being driven at about 30km/h later telling police she "just didn't think", a court has been told.
In Queenstown District Court yesterday the 21-year-old woman, granted interim name suppression, admitted failing to ensure the safety of her child, the Otago Daily Times reported.
Prosecuting Sergeant Grant Gerken said the woman, holidaying in Wanaka, had been with a group of friends at the Clutha River on January 1. The group decided to return to a camping area via a 2km gravel road.
One person lay on the roof of the vehicle, holding down an inflatable bed.
As the vehicle was travelling at about 30km/h, the woman held her baby out of the window, holding the child under the arms, with the child's legs dangling down by the road, for about 10 seconds.
An eyewitness called the police.
Remanding the woman for sentence in Gore District Court next week, Judge Dominic Flatley told her: "I can't for the life of me understand why you did what you did.
"Don't be thinking you're going to be getting off this one easily."
