First came the police siren. Then came the gunning engine. Last came the almighty bang as a car speeding through suburban Henderson smashed into an elderly woman's vehicle.
She was cut from the car and taken to Auckland Hospital suffering moderate injuries. Last night, police were still looking for the man responsible.
The woman aged in her 60s had turned her Ford Laser out of a side road, Newington Rd, on to Great North Rd, and into the path of the speeding car being driven by a man in his 20s with a woman, who would be identified only as Shannei, as his passenger.
Shannei, 25, remained stunned in the smashed Nissan Stagea station wagon nursing a bruise from the seatbelt and air-bag. The pregnant woman said they were travelling over 50km/h, perhaps about 70km/h.
She said the driver wasn't fleeing police, but a siren was sounding. "Then the crash happened."
