A 70-year-old Martinborough woman is in a critical condition in Wellington Hospital after crashing into a ditch off the side of the road just out of Martinborough.
Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr, of Masterton police, said the crash happened on Wednesday just after 4pm.
The woman was driving on State Highway 53 in a Mitsubishi utility vehicle towards Martinborough.
"A vehicle seemingly travelling in a normal manner for an unknown reason has missed a corner and driven off the road and ended up face down in a dip," Mr Burr said.
The woman was initially taken to Wairarapa Hospital but was flown to Wellington Hospital yesterday morning with internal injuries described as critical.
