A western Bay of Plenty woman has suffered deep cuts to her legs after being attacked by a pack of 12 pig dogs.
Barbara Podgajna was walking near Reporoa village, 42km southeast of Rotorua, when she was attacked by the dogs, the Rotorua Daily Post reported.
"They ran across the road at me on the footpath and started barking and then they were biting me," Mrs Podgajna said.
The dogs' owner could not tear them away as they had worked themselves into a frenzy, she said.
Others stopped, but did not come near to help.
The 10-minute attack came to an end only when Rotorua woman Aroha Barnes kicked at the pack and pulled the main dog away, allowing Mrs Podgajna to escape.
"She was my little angel," she said.
Mrs Podgajna suffered 12 cuts to her legs about 2.5cm long and 1.2cm deep.
The dogs have been taken by the Rotorua District Council's animal control unit. Supervisor Kevin Coutts said the owner was likely to be charged.
