Whangarei police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said officers were called to a family violence incident at Arcus St, Otaika, about 6pm yesterday.
A 45-year-old man had been stabbed and was taken to Whangarei Hospital with serious injuries.
Following inquiries a 43-year-old woman was located about 20 minutes later at a Morningside property. She was arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and will be appear in the Whangarei District Court today.
The house where the incident took place has been forensically examined along with a car that was seized.
