KEY POINTS:
A woman who lost control of a motor scooter when she had a two-year-old toddler riding with her, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless driving causing death in the Christchurch District Court today.
Tisian Claire Kereama, a 22-year-old described as a prostitute in court papers, was remanded on bail for a probation report and sentence on January 23 by Judge Raoul Neave, Christchurch Court News website reported.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Tu Maka told the court that the scooter was hot-wired, and Kereama was running it up and down a shared driveway in Ferry Road, and using the footpath, cycleway and grass verge to turn around.
She placed the toddler in front of her, and neither was wearing helmets.
She saw a truck coming and lost control when she hit the gutter in front of the truck. The child was thrown forward under the truck and died soon after.
Kereama said she had tried to stop, and a police check found no fault with the bike.
The name of the child has been suppressed.
