Police have charged a woman with making a false statement after spending almost three weeks on a homicide inquiry in central Auckland.
Auckland City police say they were investigating a report that someone was injured or killed in a shooting in Day St - behind the 24/7 Bar in Karangahape Rd - on August 21.
Police cordoned off Day St and examined the scene but have said little publicly about the inquiry.
Institute of Environmental Science and Research scientists carried out extensive forensic tests.
Detective Sergeant Lloyd Schmid said the homicide inquiry involved 20 to 25 staff from an already stretched police district investigating three major homicides: the shooting of Bhagubhai Vaghela at the Uptown Minimart in Eden Tce; the execution of gang member Tam Yam Ah outside his karaoke bar in Symonds St; and the violent death of Katrina Jefferies, whose body was found in Waikowhai Reserve in Hillsborough.
Mr Schmid said people reported hearing a gunshot in Day St shortly before midnight on August 21 and police were confident a gun was fired.
But they do not believe a report that a person was injured or killed.
A 36-year-old woman was last week charged with making a false statement and wasting police time.
Mr Schmid said the Day St inquiry was linked to another shooting five days later in Durham St, Auckland City, where a man was shot in the foot.
The victim was an "innocent member of the public" who became embroiled in an argument on the street, said Mr Schmid.
A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with possessing methamphetamine and breach of probation.
He will face a further charge of using a firearm with reckless disregard for others when he appears in court again next month.
Mr Schmid said he could not say how the cases were linked but police have released details of two Headhunters associates they are keen to contact about the Day St shooting.
He would like to hear from anyone with information about Luther Adamson, a 27-year-old from Massey, and Mase Raeli, 35, of Avondale.
He can be contacted on 0274-746-663.
