The woman is charged with murdering a 22-month-old girl in Dunedin on Monday.
She was remanded to reappear in court next Friday.
Her arrest late yesterday followed a police investigation involving members of the toddler's family, people who had contact with her and the forensic examination of a suburban St Kilda house where she died.
