A Bay of Plenty woman who claimed burglars beat her unconscious and knocked her teeth out has been arrested and accused of making the incident up.
The woman, a 38-year-old-baker, has been charged with making a false statement and will appear in Tauranga District Court on October 6, police said.
Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier on Monday put out an urgent appeal for sightings of the alleged burglars, who the woman said had attacked her at her Mount Maunganui home on September 18.
She claimed she had been punched in the back of the head and repeatedly kicked and punched while she was on the ground.
She told police she was knocked unconscious, suffered bruising and lacerations all over her face and body and lost two teeth.
Mr Brazier told NZPA at the time he was extremely concerned about the attack on a defenceless woman, which he said was "callous" and "vicious and unprovoked".
The woman also claimed the burglars stole a lawnmower, a surfboard, a wetsuit and two skateboards.
