A 93-year-old woman has died after the mobility scooter she was riding on a Whakatane footpath was hit by a car.
The woman was knocked off her scooter by a vehicle exiting a driveway of a house on Tuhoe Ave at around 12.30pm on Saturday.
She was rushed to Whakatane hospital but died of her injuries.
"Police extend their sympathies to the deceased's family," a police statement said today.
"The name of the deceased will be released once next-of-kin have been advised."
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Whakatane Police station on (07) 308 5255.
"This serves as a reminder for all drivers that when exiting driveways to ensure the path is clear before reversing," the police statement said.
The Bay of Plenty serious crash unit is investigating the death.
Warren Pay, jailed for murder, is now free after being re-sentenced for manslaughter.
