Woman, 18, in court over Hayden Miles murder

An 18 year-old woman accused of helping the man charged with the murder of Christchurch teenager Hayden Miles to evade police was back in court today.

A judge this morning continued a name suppression order on the advice of a medical report.

The unemployed woman is charged with knowing that Gavin Gosnell murdered the 15-year-old and actively suppressed evidence against him.

Police say she helped 27-year-old Gosnell avoid arrest on August 23, last year - the day after Hayden was allegedly killed.

At a Christchurch District Court session at Nga Hau e Wha marae this morning, she faced other unrelated charges, including two of shoplifting, two drug-related charges, burglary, being found unlawfully in a yard, a breach of bail, and breach of community work.

Defence counsel Tom Stevens asked for all matters to be continued until March 23 for a post-committal conference.

He also asked for name suppression to continue, on the advice of a doctor's report compiled after her arrest in December. Judge Paul Kellar agreed, remanded her on bail, continued the name suppression order, and denied media applications for the woman to be photographed in the dock.

The woman, who has been bailed to an address in Upper Riccarton, left court, flanked by family members.

Gosnell, unemployed, denies the murder and will also next appear in court on March 23 for a post-committal conference.

A 35-year-old Christchurch man with name suppression has also been charged with robbing Miles of a cask of wine, cellphone and iPod, on the day he disappeared.

Miles, who was in Child, Youth and Family care, went missing after going to a friend's house at Cashel St on August 22 - the day police say he was murdered.

His remains were found on December 13 at Ruru Lawn Cemetery in Linwood and his distraught family laid him to rest at a memorial service on December 23.
