KEY POINTS:
A 17-year-old woman has been jailed for two years and nine months after stabbing another girl in the face with a broken bottle.
Paige Marie Mareangaru was sentenced yesterday in Invercargill District Court yesterday after pleading guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The court was told Mareangaru had stabbed 17-year-old Jodi Bonney on January 1 this year because she was in a bad mood that day, the Southland Times reported.
Judge Kevin Phillips said Miss Bonney was scared to go out in public because of the cuts she received to her face.
He had previously directed Mareangaru, who turned 17 today, to be sentenced in the District Court rather than the Youth Court.
"This is gratuitous violence ... I must hold you accountable, I must encourage you to seek responsibility as an adult."
