Taupo Area Police are appealing for witnesses after a 71-year-old was attacked in the south Waikato town of Putaruru on Saturday night.
Bay of Plenty District crime manager, Detective Inspector Tim Anderson, said the local man was assaulted at the Putaruru Hotel about 11pm.
The man was taken to Waikato Hospital the following day.
Police said they are speaking to a number of witnesses who were at the hotel at the time the incident occurred, and would be keen to talk to anyone else who may have been at the hotel or in the area then.
