WeatherWatch.co.nz reported large hail, which was caused by towering clouds crossing the city with thunderstorms, slamming West Auckland suburbs as it came off the sea and crossed over the Waitakere Ranges.
More isolated thunderstorms and hail are possible over the next 24 hours in Auckland and in most main centres across New Zealand as the main polar blast moves in.
With the polar blast now coming in we've changed the wind map at https://t.co/gb7E1qcpZ3 to represent the 'Misery Index'. Here's a screenshot:
- The blue colour indicates the wind chill is below 0 degrees Celsius (the negatives!)
"We don't want to be telling your loved ones you aren't coming home again."
Murky and rainy conditions in some parts of the South and the large number of motorcycles on the roads for the Brass Monkey Rally could create a perfect storm for crashes, and police would be out in force this weekend, Snr Sgt Dinnissen said.
"Plan for a long trip home. If you're running late, just be late."
