Wairarapa got themselves off to a flying start at the national under-15 girls hockey tournament being played in Tauranga.
They won both their opening two games in pool play, beating Poverty Bay 1-0 and Bay of Plenty 3-0.
Coach Rochelle Retter said her side created numerous scoring chances in the Poverty Bay game but the only goal came from Paige Goodin.
"We should have won by more, we had it all over them in territory and possession,"she said. " But we struggled with our finishing work, we just weren't decisive enough there."
Outstanding for Wairarapa was hard-working midfielder Jade Forman.
Wairarapa took a little while to settle into their game against Bay of Plenty but improved markedly as the match progressed.
"It wasn't perfect but there some patches of really good hockey," Retter said.
Shakira Baker (2) and Kate Batty scored the goals for Wairarapa with Baker's penetration on attack a feature of the game. Paige Goodin and Kelsey Governor were other Wairarapa players to shine.
