We know him as Fish - and this year, he hooked the big one.
David Fisher was named best reporter at the Canon Media Awards on Friday night for a portfolio of investigations, including the revelations of air force failures following the fatal Anzac Day Iroquois crash; an exclusive interview with Kim Dotcom; the donations to John Banks' mayoral campaign; and a report on the huge ACC privacy scandal.
Judge Jim Tully said Fisher clearly relished uncovering the news. His writing was sharp and direct and his stories spoke of good contact work and tenacity.
Fisher said the award was a reflection of the passion in the Herald newsroom.
"There's a lot of belief in and enthusiasm for stories which matter. There's a strong editorial management support for good journalism, and the new compact size carries one or two strong news features each day, meaning there is plenty of room for stories which go beyond the basic details."
