The judging panel could not separate the two nominees for the premier award, the Eagle Trophy for Swimmer of the Year, at Swim Wairarapa's annual end-of-season prizegiving function in Greytown last Friday.
So Bella Biggs and Isaac Foote were declared joint winners.
For Biggs the honour came just two days after she was named 2010-11 Wairarapa Junior Sports Personality of the Year. Foote was also adding to an impressive list of successes, having been named Sportsman of the Year and Personality of the Year at the 2010 Wairarapa secondary schools sports awards, and youth category winner and supreme award winner at the 2010 Wairarapa Maori sports awards.
In the water Biggs, 11, won two gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the national junior championships, broke a remarkable 25 Swim Wairarapa records, and secured most points for her age group at the Wellington winter and long course champs as well as the Central Hawke's Bay and Swim Wairarapa champs.
Foote was a consistent performer at the national age group champs, where he collected a bronze medal and six top-10 placings. Not only did he star in the pool on a regular basis but he also proved himself to be among the country's most promising in open-water competition. His sportsmanship and leadership abilities were also recognised by him becoming the current holder of the T Hullena Cup.
The Gay Salter Trophy for the most outstanding performance at the Wairarapa swimming championships went to Jessie Parker of Carterton, who was in her first year of competitive swimming. She took an amazing 18.97secs off her previous best time when she won her 200m freestyle final.
