Wings Over Wairarapa organisers say they are gutted to announce that today's air festival and night shows will be cancelled due to bad weather.

"We are gutted to announce the news," the organisers said.

"Sunday's forecast is for showers of rain, and the chance of thunderstorms and small hail.
"Persistent rain...has created unsafe ground conditions."

The outlook is also not looking good for the Black Caps who are set to open their ODI series against South Africa this afternoon in Hamilton.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said occasional heavy and sometimes thundery showers were forecasted for Hamilton this afternoon and evening.

Scattered showers, some heavy, can be expected for all of the North Island especially during the afternoon and evening, when some could be thundery with small hail.

Christchurch was looking to get a mainly fine day, but could get some showers this afternoon and cloudy and patchy drizzle this evening.

There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms forming over many areas from south Auckland to Wairarapa, including Bay of Plenty and Gisborne this afternoon.

"If these thunderstorms occur, they are likely to be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 15 to 25mm per hour and hail of 5 to 15mm in diameter," MetService said.

Heating and local convergences also means there was a chance of thunderstorms over eastern Marlborough for the afternoon and evening, and a low risk of thunderstorms for western Northland.

A moist northeast flow over the North Island and northern South Island bringing some showers about Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo and coastal areas of Central Hawkes Bay.

It will be mainly dry for most of the country tomorrow, but another front moves in from Tuesday bring isolated showers to Taranaki, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Auckland.
