Marlborough wine growers are being asked to investigate alternative water supplies as dry weather threatens to shut down the local council's irrigation system.
The Wairau River is at its lowest level since recording started 40 years ago.
Marlborough District Council hydrologist Michael Ede says the council has spent $18 million on its southern irrigation scheme, but lower than normal rainfall means it may need to be shut down within two weeks.
He says the council's irrigation scheme pipes water to the southern valleys.
