Windy weekend ahead

North Islanders should prepare for a wet and very windy weekend.

Severe weather warnings have been issued for Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, the Kaimai Ranges and Waikato.

Weatherwatch analyst Philip Duncan says the subtropical low will bring heavy rain. Strong winds on Sunday morning could reach up to 160 kilometres an hour along the eastern Waikato and western Kaimais.

The storm should move away from the country quite quickly on Monday.
