KEY POINTS:
Wind gusts of up to 110km/h are set to batter parts of Canterbury and Otago.
Metservice forecaster Ian Miller said gusts could be strong enough to bring down powerlines, damage trees and insecure roofs.
The bad weather could also make driving dangerous for motorcyclists.
Mr Miller warned a strengthening southwest flow would hit Otago between midnight Friday and 9am Saturday.
It would then travel north and strike Canterbury between 9am and 9pm on Saturday.
He said heavy rain would also give the two regions a drenching.
