Meridian Energy says it will be up to Wellington residents to decide the future of the country's first wind turbine.
The single turbine was erected on Brooklyn Hill in 1993 but has been out of commission for the past four months due to mechanical problems.
Built as a trial machine, it has been one of the most productive wind turbines in the world attracting thousands of visitors annually.
Meridian says there are a range of options for its future - including repairing or replacing it with new technology, or removing it completely.
But before the company does anything, it wants to find out whether it is the turbine or the view that draws the crowds.
"It's a case of `should I stay or should I go?' says spokeswoman Claire Shaw.
"We want to find out what this landmark means to the city. Its fate is in their hands. We will listen and act on the response we get."
