Giants coach Tony Nixon says victory is the only acceptable result for his side in their Hutt Valley premier league men's softball semi-final match with Hutt Valley Marist at Petone tonight.
It will be the fourth meeting between the two this season with Giants having won three of those and Nixon sees no reason why that trend shouldn't continue.
"I'm not saying we are past the post but it's very definitely a game we should win," Nixon said. "Any other result would be disappointing, that's for sure".
Giants will go into tonight's match with a simple game plan which revolves around ensuring the basics are done well.
"We don't have to do anything flashy, we just have to go out there with a positive mindset and trust in our ability to get the job done," Nixon said.
The depth of the Giants' batting order is likely to have a big say in tonight's outcome with big hitters like the Karaitiana brothers, Justin and Corie, Michael Grant and Blair Thompson sure to place pressure on a Marist pitching staff which has buckled in the past.
And in Justin Karaitiana, Ritchie Clarke and Mark Quinn, Giants have three pitchers of their own who have proved themselves time and time again in top company.
"They (Marist) do have some young fellas who can hit the ball a long way but our pitchers have contained them before, and I'd expect that to be the case again," Nixon said.
Giants also has been favoured by a draw which sees their semi-final starting at 8pm rather than the usual 6.30pm for Thursday night matches, something which has often seen them practically step straight off the bus and onto the playing field.
"We've got an extra an hour so to get the bodies warmed up so there'll be no excuses in that respect either," Nixon said
Successfully through tonight's match Giants will go forward to the grand final on Saturtday where their opponent would be either of the other two semi-finalists, Cardinals or Hutt City United.
Win the only good result, says Nixon
