The Wairarapa College senior A boys basketball team recorded a win and loss on their recent trip to Hawke's Bay, losing to Hastings Boy High 61-66 before beating St Johns College 72-58.
Four points each from Zane Hopman and Wiremu Grace helped Wairarapa College to be trailing by just 20-14 at the end of the first quarter of their game against Hastings Boys High despite a slow start.
The second quarter saw the Wairarapa College guards struggle against the HBH press and while Grace and Peter Beech still managed to find the basket on a regular basis the home team was ahead 42-25 at halftime.
It was a much improved Wairarapa College in the third quarter and with Jacob Carson and Peter Beech showing the way they basically matched HBS point for point.In fact, they outscored their opposition 14-13 in this period of the game.
Wairarapa College maintained their momentum in the fourth and final quarter.Stephen Ashby and Peter Beech both came up with eight points and at 66-61 Jacob Carson was fouled while attempting a three pointer.The shot bounded around the ring before dropping out and while Carson was given three free throws he was unable to capitalise and HBS held their five-point advantage at the end.
Peter Beech, who was named Wairarapa College's most valuable player, registered 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists, five steals and one block.Other scorers were Wiremu Grace 8, Stephen Ashby 8, Jacob Carson 6, Lachie McFadzean 5, Zane Hopman 4, Seb McFadzean 2,Corey McFadzean 2, Scott Topham 2 and Patrick Topham 2.
Wairarapa College started their game against St Johns College with an aggressive press which immediately put their opposition on the back foot. Jacob Carson scored with some impressive outside shots and Peter Beech was also in good scoring form.So despite allowing St Johns some soft baskets Wairarapa College led 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Lachie McFadzean and Wiremu Grace starred in a second quarter which finished with Wairarapa College leading 36-31, an advantage they held at the end of the third quarter as well.
And then in the last quarter Wairarapa College stretched their lead thanks to some impressive drives by Scott Topham and smart moves by Jacob Carson.
Topham top scored in this game with 25 points, five free throws, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Other scorers were Peter Beech 14, Lachie McFadzean 10, Scott Topham 7, Seb McFadzean 5, Wiremu Grace 4, Stephen Ashby 3, Zane Hopman 3 and Joe Beech 1.
