Attorney-General and high-ranking Cabinet minister Margaret Wilson has joined a heavyweight battle for the Tauranga seat at next year's general election.
Ms Wilson was selected unopposed at a Tauranga Labour electorate committee meeting - ending any speculation she would step aside.
Three high-profile candidates will contest the Tauranga seat, which New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has held for 20 years. Joining Ms Wilson in the battle to oust him is National Party candidate Bob Clarkson.
"I live here and it would be ridiculous not to contest the seat," Ms Wilson said yesterday. "I will be fully active because it's important to give the people of Tauranga a genuine choice. There may be two other high-profile campaigners and that's when Labour can come through the middle."
