It was a local victory when Erin Wilson won the inaugural Subway Wairarapa women's triathlon on Sunday.
Wilson, from Masterton, completed the event, which consisted of running, cycling and swimming and was based around Queen Elizabeth Park, in 41min 36s.
Second was Sally Mitchell, also of Masterton, in 41.49 and third Stephanie Anderson of Wellington in 42.33.
The winning team was the Groovy Grannies consisting of Megan Payton, Pam Lochore and Ronny Percy of Masterton. They finished in 45.47.
A total of 126 women took part in the event with Sport Wairarapa spokesperson Dayle Clarkson saying entries were bigger than anticipated. She said the concept was nothing new, however, as it was run along the lines of the popular Special K triathlon series.
"We are hoping this event will continue to grow and perhaps even move around the Wairarapa region in terms of venues," she said.
Clarkson also noted that the women's triathlon was linked to the newly-developed Wairarapa physical activity plan which was helping to encourage women between the ages of 25yrs and 45yrs to become more active.
