Two Wairarapa athletes will be competing at the Australian under-23 and under-20 track and field championships in Adelaide this coming weekend.
Sprinter Michael Wilson will contest the 100m and 200m in the under-23 section while Vicky Paine will race in the under-20 400m.
Both athletes will be heading across the Tasman after solid showings at the New Zealand track and field championships at Newtown Park.
Wilson made the final of the senior men's 100m there and placed fifth equal in 10.70secs which would have been a personal best but for being wind assisted.
Paine reached the final of the women's 19yrs and under 400m and came fourth in 57.80secs.
Coach Mark Harris will accompany Wilson and Paine to Adelaide and he sees them as potential finalists in their events.
"Obviously they will be up against some high calibre opposition but if they produce their best form they can make the top eight," he said.
Harris said both Wilson and Paine were continuing to work on improving technical aspects of their running styles and were hoping that the slight adjustments being made would work in their favour across the Tasman.
"When you are competing at this level you need to be totally efficient in everything you do, that's the challenge for them," he said.
