Act Party leader John Banks has appointed a former Act Party president and candidate to oversee the implementation of charter schools, a move opponents have labelled 'ideological'.
Catherine Isaac will lead a committee of six people to oversee the trial of charter schools, which are to be set up in South Auckland and Christchurch, as a result of the Act Party's confidence and supply agreement with National.
Associate Education Minister John Banks told Radio New Zealand Ms Isaac is well respected and "loves education", having spent six years on a school board.
The first charter schools will be introduced in South Auckland and East and Central Christchurch, possibly within the next year.
