Heavy weather is moving down the North Island.

Thunderstorms, hail and even a few small tornadoes are expected through Waitomo, Taumarunui and Taranaki this afternoon.

Central Auckland has just taken a drenching, which has caused superficial flooding on some roads.

Auckland recorded some 600 lightning strikes in the space of an hour.
