Wellington City Council staff and contractors worked to clear roads of debris, caused by the flooding.
Areas affected included State Highway 2 north of Upper Hutt, State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt, State Highway 1 near Johnsonville, Main Road Tawa and other residential areas throughout the region.
Today, MetService meteorologist Erick Brenstrum said all severe weather warnings and watches for heavy rain and strong winds had been cancelled.
"The last of it died away overnight," he said.
"Today we have got a much more settled day, there is still some light showers over western parts of both islands and one or two down in Canterbury, Kaikoura coast.
"But a lot of places are fine, and the winds are dropping and tomorrow looks like a pretty good day for most people as well."
Mr Brenstrum said thunder storms also affected Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, Nelson and Buller yesterday, as well as Wellington.
"All of that's gone and some of those places have just a few light showers left. The drama is over and we have settled weather for the next few days."
The Homegrown music festival in Wellington will go ahead today - after it was postponed yesterday due to bad weather and strong winds of up to 120km/h.
On an update on its website this morning, Homegrown organisers said the show would "definitely" proceed today.
"The weather is looking great and the sun is shining so the festival will definitely proceed today with all 7 stages and performers as planned."
The festival is set to kick off from 11am with a high of 22C in Wellington.
Meanwhile sunny skies were forecast for today's Cricket World Cup match in Napier between the Black Caps and Afghanistan.
Fresh westerly winds would ease off, and a high of 27C was expected, MetService said.
Looking ahead, a ridge was expected to spread over the North Island on Monday, while a weak trough over the South Island would bring some showers, MetService said on its website.
A second trough would follow on Tuesday, bringing a period of rain or showers to much of the South Island, before it weakened on Wednesday.
