GWRC transport portfolio leader Councillor Paul Swain said wi-fi will be installed at some Wairarapa stations, but that the programme and scope for the work is still in early stages.
He said that Telecommunications have also been given permission to investigate the options and the ability to trial an on-train wi-fi system for the Wairarapa Line.
In addition to wi-fi feedback, Cr Swain also noted that "it is been a great year for patronage growth."
Patronage on the Wairarapa Line has grown 7 per cent on peak and 4 per cent off peak since last year.
"We suspect the demand has always been there and that the additional capacity GW has provided in the form of the SE cars has facilitated additional journeys," Cr Swain said.
He said additional funding has been allocated to conduct KiwiRail work that will improve reliability and reduce speed restrictions on the Hutt and Wairarapa Lines.
"The KiwiRail work will mainly focus on track works that will reduce the number of speed restrictions imposed by the network owner, KiwiRail," Cr Swain said.
"Typical works will include sleeper replacements, bridge strengthening, level crossings and track formation improvements."
Tranz Metro statistics show that for August, 86 per cent of Wairarapa Line services were on time.
This has been a progressive increase since April, when half of Wairarapa services were not on time.
