Ratepayers are being asked to underwrite about $40 million to cover the cost of redeveloping Eden Park which is being revamped for the 2011 rugby World Cup.
Radio New Zealand reported today that the Government has refused to increase its contribution of $190m from the Government, and has asked councils to cover funding gaps while commercial sponsorship was sought.
Funding for the stadium has been a sticking point for Auckland City Council, which has in the past insisted it won't contribute cash for the project.
