National manager, Canteen
Pocket CV: Roger Hill
1998-2004: Manager-transport, Infrastructure Auckland
1994-1998: Marketing manager, Yellow Bus Co
1991-1994: Asst general manager, consumer and rural markets, NZI Insurance
What were you doing before accepting your new position?
After the dis-establishment of Infrastructure Auckland in June last year I have been consulting for North Shore City on transport and strategic planning issues. During the IA role I was involved in the funding and evaluation of transport projects in the Auckland region, such as Britomart, the northern busway, ferry wharves, rail corridor upgrade and walking school buses.
Why did you apply for this job?
I have wanted to apply the skills I have learned to a non-profit entity for some time, and Canteen - which supports young people living with cancer - was attractive from most angles. There is a wish to "give something back" as I have enjoyed my career and can now concentrate on helping to make a difference in a worthwhile area.
What does your new job entail?
The role has strategic and operational leadership accountability for Canteen through a member board, who represent Canteen members nationally.
What particular challenges do you face working in the not-for-profit sector?
Understanding changing needs and providing relevant programmes and services to the different categories of members. Consistency of service delivery across the country and harnessing key staff skills.
Will it be a difficult transition moving into this new job?
I have been involved with the sector before through voluntary work, and the management principles applicable are still relevant. It is the sensitivity and judgments required that will challenge.
What are the immediate challenges ahead of you?
Understanding the core values and the "Canteen way" as quickly as possible. Also getting to grips with the health sector mechanisms for young people living with cancer, and supporting health professionals.
What else might you have done?
I was determined to secure a role of this type and was prepared to wait for the right one. If that had failed I may have engaged in transport consulting in a more specialised niche.
What do you do in your spare time?
I am very lucky to have a great family and I like to spend time with them. Fishing, golf, cricket, rugby and European history are other relaxation pursuits.
