Q; Why did you apply for this job?
A: This gives me the opportunity to use my skills and experience from 23 years in five different retail industries. Having had previous experience in the franchise environment I was impressed with the professionalism and quality of the Bakers Delight franchise system, the franchisers' support and the Bakers Delight business model.
Q: What were you doing before accepting your new position?
A: I was working in a senior executive role for Warehouse Stationery.
Q: Have you ever worked as a baker or in a bakery?
A: When I first entered the workforce as a trainee manager for Foodtown Supermarkets I started a six-year training programme which covered all departments, including the bakery.
Q: What are the major challenges ahead of you?
A: Retailing in New Zealand is competitive. There will never be any room for complacency, poor-quality product or poor-quality service. Continued organisational and franchise system effectiveness will be driven through new levels of service quality to an increasingly sophisticated and demanding customer. This challenge will be enjoyable as Bakers Delight has already identified service quality to be a critical success factor.
Q: What does being general manager mean to you?
A: To provide leadership that is based on the fundamental principle that your customers and team members are most important to the success of the organisation - the human values. To achieve high performance this must be balanced through strong management systems and technology.
Q: How will you help to overcome the skills shortage of qualified bakers?
A: By further driving Bakers Delight's already serious commitment and support to franchisees' apprentices and team member development through the Bakers Delight franchising training system and bakery skills programme.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: Spend as much time as possible with my family. I also enjoy working on my lifestyle block, as well as scuba diving, fishing and recreational game hunting.
