What were you doing before accepting your new position?
I was working for a chartered accountancy firm where I was responsible for completing the firm's annual and monthly accounts. I also completed GST returns, annual accounts and tax returns for clients.
Why did you apply for this job?
I felt I would be better suited to [a commercial] environment and have the opportunity to learn more about running a company. The job responsibilities were what I was looking for and the idea of working in a recruitment company appealed because it sounded like a fun and dynamic atmosphere.
What does your new job entail?
What don't I do? Annual and monthly accounts, PAYE, GST & FBT returns, cash-flow management, budgets, monthly and weekly payroll for temporary and permanent staff, Accounts payable/accounts receivables and HR, and also reporting to the directors.
What major challenges are ahead?
I think the biggest challenge is getting used to the busy and somewhat loud atmosphere of a recruitment company as opposed to the more conservative atmosphere of a chartered accountancy firm.
What does being the company accountant mean to you?
It means being part of a great team and contributing to a fast-growing recruitment company. It's also a great new step in my career.
What else might you have done?
I was looking at accounting roles within fast-moving consumer goods companies. Having an interest within the industry you work for is important as it keeps me motivated and, presently, I couldn't imagine doing anything different.
