Pocket CV
Chief Executive Office, YHA New Zealand
Name: Mark Wells
2003-2004 - General Manager, Southern Barnardos
1995-2003 - Service Delivery General Manger, Central and Southern Regions, Relationship Services Incorporated
Q: Why did you apply for this job?
A: My commitment to work in a values-based organisation and the strong alignment between my values and those of YHA.
The YHA brand has a long, proud and positive history and reputation, and has not only developed a fantastic accommodation network, but also assumed a respected industry leadership position. In addition, YHA has a very active commitment to the environment and to sustainable development, and maintains a range of community programmes.
Q: What are the major challenges ahead of you?
A: A misconception exists, particularly among New Zealanders, that YHA is only for "young" people. They are often surprised to find out that YHA accommodation is for the young at heart as well - our 26,000 New Zealand Members represent all ages and backgrounds.
We're seeing a trend, with people realising that at any time in their life - and on any budget - they can see the places they've always wanted to. Our challenge is to reach Kiwis of all ages and show them what the network offers.
Obviously, I also need to develop a good understanding of the tourism sector and the budget accommodation industry. This is particularly important given the highly competitive nature of this industry. However, the most exciting challenge is associated with the vast opportunities that exist for YHA.
Q: What qualities do you bring to the job?
A: Principle-centred leadership, which is participatory and inclusive. A strategic orientation which considers possibilities. Considerable experience in financial management and business planning. Well-developed communication skills.
Q: What do you enjoy about this role?
A: My beginning period as CEO includes a commitment to meeting with as many staff and volunteers as possible, which I am looking forward to. I am also extremely excited about leading an organisation that has developed a well-earned reputation for sustainable business practices.
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: I enjoy tennis, golf, music, windsurfing and spending time with my family.
