Steve Johns, Chief executive officer, Surf Lifesaving, Northern region
Steve Johns was brought up in New Plymouth and spent much of his time as a life guard. He competed for the Fitzroy Surf Lifesaving Club so it seems a natural step after spending four years running the Millennium Institute of Sport & Health on Auckland's North Shore to lead the northern region's Surf Lifesaving organisation.
"I moved to Auckland in the 1990s to play water polo at competition level so it's good to get back to being a part of the surf life saving scene," said Johns.
"I look forward to encouraging people to get involved.
"One of my first tasks will be to start planning for the summer season and to raise the profile of the organisation. "We are a not-for-profit organisation so there will be a need to attract funding and sponsorship to keep it all afloat."
Johns has played around 60 games for New Zealand in water polo and has coached the Under-15 and schoolboy teams.
He has won the Nelson Shield for the Open six Place and the open men's tube rescue.
