Were you one of the people who applied for this job and wondered who got it?
Job title: Regional sales and marketing manager, New Zealand and Pacific Islands, OneSteel.
Steel products company OneSteel has opted for an internal promotion to fill its top Auckland-based sales position.
Neil Downing, 35, has been with OneSteel's parent company, Australian steel giant BHP, since 1989, when he graduated from Massey University with a bachelor of technology degree.
OneSteel was created in October 2000 following a decision by BHP to split its flat and long-products steel divisions, and "spin out" the long-products division on the Australian Stock Exchange to operate as an independent company.
The aim was to establish OneSteel as an independent, competitive long-products niche steel producer.
Before moving into his new role, Downing was OneSteel's market manager for distribution. His previous positions within the BHP group have included operational and international sales and marketing roles.
"My role is to focus on key strategies with the priority to continually improve the underlying performance of the business and the service we provide our New Zealand and Pacific Islands customers," he says.
Those strategies will include seeking profitable business opportunities and taking an active role in the Steel Construction Industry of NZ, which promotes the use of structural steels in multi-story buildings.
