In answer to the perennial question, it was Rob Puru who ate all the pies.
And now he might be the Fastest Pie Eater in the world after eating a mince pie in 17.188 seconds to win the inaugural pie eating champs in Hamilton.
The competition, organised by The Pie Men bakery in Hamilton, whittled dozens of competitors down to Puru, who was awarded a year's supply of pies. His time easily beats the world record of 23.91 seconds - although technical questions of pie dimension need to be resolved before the title is awarded. Puru prepared for the 5.30pm contest by having only a burger for lunch. He ate three pies to win the title, with the heats, then semifinal and the final taking place in a tight timeframe.
"When it got to the final I felt nervous. I felt a bit sick, to be honest. I didn't think I was going to pick up that pie and eat it."
He did, and beat previous times with the blistering 17.188 second gulp.
