KEY POINTS:
A man has been swept to his death while whitebaiting on the west coast of the South Island this afternoon.
Police communications Inspector Warren Kemp said emergency services were called after the man was swept away at the mouth of the Hokitika River, 40km south-west of Greymouth, about 1.10pm.
Police and helicopters were dispatched, but were unable to save him.
His body was found a short time later, Mr Kemp said.
