Lake Ferry, Wairarapa's most popular whitebaiting spot, opened for the first day of the whitebait season yesterday.
Community relations programme manager for the Department of Conservation (DOC) Garry Foster reminded whitebaiters to familiarise themselves with the regulations.
"They are put there to ensure that everybody gets a fair go, including the fish," he said.
Breaching the regulations can result in fines of up to $5000.
The season runs until November 30 and is policed by DOC rangers.
