Pahiatua motorcycle ace Paul Whibley was back at the top of the podium in the United States last weekend.
He and his wife Katherine packed up the Yamaha YZ450F and headed off to the Palmetto motocross complex in Gaston, South Carolina, for the opening round of the Mid East XC series, an event which drew a huge turnout of more than 300 bikes and riders keen to try their luck in the two-hour race on a sand-based course.
Whibley made a flying start and quickly opened up a lead of about 15 seconds with Australian Josh Strang in second place. The gap remained the same for the first lap and the second lap saw Strang strike problems and by the end of that Whibley was about one minute in front.
From there it was pretty much all Whibley and by the finish he had 90s to spare over Strang with Japanese rider Takashi Koikeda in third place.
